The best Premier League wingers of all time
Published:
The role of the winger has changed drastically since the Premier League's inception but their influence on the team has never been in doubt.
In the early days, wingers were expected to hug the touchline and get chalk on their boots, whipping in crosses for their strikers to nod home. Nowadays, wide players are essentially forwards who drift inside and chip in with goals.
What has never changed, however, is that they are often the most exciting players to watch, with some of the world's most talented ever wingers starring over the years, dazzling with their pace, flair and technical ability.
Ladbrokes ranks the 10 all-time best wingers from England's top flight.
Premier League best wingers ranked
10. David Ginola (Newcastle, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Everton)
A flair player with immense technical ability, David Ginola brought style and panache to the Premier League with Newcastle and Tottenham.
He was a fan favourite for his dribbling and long-range goals, winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 1999.
9. Riyad Mahrez (Leicester, Manchester City)
Riyad Mahrez was instrumental in one of the Premier League's most miraculous title wins with Leicester in 2015-16 before winning several more with Manchester City in the years after.
The Algerian's first touch was unrivalled and his ability to turn defenders inside out with his agility made him a joy to watch.
8. Sadio Mane (Southampton, Liverpool)
Sadio Mane impressed many at Southampton, but it was at Liverpool where he became a Premier league great after forming one part of one of English football's most feared front threes.
Mane, alongside Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, dragged the Reds back to the top of English football under Jurgen Klopp, with the Senegalese using blistering pace and finishing to deadly effect time and time again.

7. David Beckham (Manchester United)
Fittingly coming in at No7, David Beckham redefined the right winger role with his pinpoint delivery.
A central figure in Manchester United’s treble-winning 1998–99 season, his affect not only on football but on English culture as a whole cannot be underestimated.
6. Robert Pires (Arsenal, Aston Villa)
A graceful and intelligent winger, Pires was a cornerstone of Arsenal’s “Invincibles” squad.
The Frenchman's ability to combine with Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp made him one of the most effective and elegant wide players of his era under Arsene Wenger.
5. Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
On the opposite side of Manchester United's midfield, Ryan Giggs is comfortably one of the Premier League's greatest for his sheer longevity, success but, more importantly, his immense talent.
The Welsh wizard holds the record the most assists with 162 , while he also tops the list for the most titles with 13.
4. Eden Hazard (Chelsea)
Eden Hazard lit up the Premier League with Chelsea through his balance, dribbling, and ability to decide games single-handedly.
A two-time league winner, he was named PFA Player of the Year in 2015 and remains one of Chelsea’s greatest ever.

3. Gareth Bale (Tottenham)
Gareth Bale's 2013-14 campaign for Tottenham is arguably one of the greatest individual seasons ever, but he was a player defenders hated coming up against for many years before that.
Initially a left-back, Bale's physicality, pace and explosive power developed as the years went on, becoming a simply brilliant wide player before his world-record move to Real Madrid.
2. Mohamed Salah (Chelsea, Liverpool)
Salah’s goalscoring record as a winger is extraordinary, with multiple Golden Boots and a pivotal role in Liverpool’s Premier League and Champions League triumphs.
The Egyptian's consistency, pace, and cutting-edge finishing have made him one of the league’s modern greats and his form for the champions this season has put him in contention for the Ballon d'Or.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)
Cristiano Ronaldo revolutionized the winger position during his first stint at Manchester United with electric pace, dazzling skills, and a remarkable goal tally.
The Portugal icon won three Premier League titles and a Ballon d’Or at Old Trafford before becoming one of the greatest players in history after moving to Real Madrid and, at age 40, is still going at Al-Nassr.
