St Johnstone v Rangers Tips: Saints to finally end their Gers hoodoo?
Published:
There’s plenty at stake for both sides on Sunday, as Rangers make the journey to McDiarmid Park to face a resurgent St Johnstone.
Steven Gerrard’s men beat Saints 5-1 back in September, but a lot has changed since then. The visitors are enduring a frustrating run, while Tommy Wright’s side have been rising up the table of late.
Ahead of this lunchtime showdown in the Ladbrokes Premiership, we’ve got the odds and info…
Match odds
Last weekend’s unlucky 2-1 defeat to Motherwell was Saints’ first loss in eight matches – a run in which they won at Pittodrie and Easter Road.
By contrast, the Gers have won just once in their last five games. Though decent at the back, they’ve managed just two goals in that period.
In the Match Betting, the visitors are 6/10 favourites. Meanwhile, it’s 29/10 for the Draw and a chunky 9/2 for a St Johnstone victory. That would mark a first home win in this fixture since 2010.
Goals are likely to be at a premium, and we go 21/20 for Under 2.5. As for a scoreline bet, 1-0 to Saints could prove popular at 16/1. The hosts have won three of their last nine fixtures by that scoreline.
Talking Tactics
The Perth outfit are likely to stick with the 4-4-2 which has served them so well in the past couple of months. Much of their threat comes out wide, with David Wotherspoon and the goal-happy Blair Alston ones to watch on the flanks.
Further back, the centre-half pairing of stalwart Joe Shaughnessy and youngster Jason Kerr is likely to continue.
Gerrard has stuck with 4-3-3 for his side, and Alfredo Morelos is likely to lead the front trio – with Eros Grezda and Daniel Candieas either side of him. That could see versatile teenager Glenn Middleton shifting to a midfield role.
Goalscorer odds
For the hosts, Alston could be one to watch. He’s 4/1 to notch for the third time in four games – and also scored Saints’ solitary goal at Ibrox in September.
Up front, Tony Watt will be looking to recapture the form which saw him bag five goals in as many games at the start of the season. He’s 3/1 Anytime.
Unsurprisingly, the prolific Morelos leads the list of likely scorers at 21/20. Meanwhile, James Tavernier – who broke the deadlock in the last two meetings – is 17/2 as First Goalscorer.
