Mohamed Salah stays: Liverpool winger signs new deal to remain at Anfield
Published:
Mohamed Salah has put speculation over his future to bed by signing a new two-year deal to remain a Liverpool player beyond the 2024/25 season.
The 'Egyptian King' was heading towards the final few weeks of his Liverpool contract, but chatter that Salah's days with the Reds were numbered has been shut down after the announcement that he's staying.
While the club hasn't put an official length on his new contract, reports from several reputable sources have claimed that Salah has put pen to paper on a two-year deal, keeping him at Liverpool until 2027.
Mohamed Salah signs new Liverpool contract
Up until last week, it seemed like a new deal between Liverpool and Salah was still some way away, but that changed on April 9 when reputable journalists such as David Ornstein stated that the two parties had reached a breakthrough in talks, with a new contract now likely.
Less than 48 hours later, and that has now been confirmed, with Liverpool announcing in the morning of April 11 that Salah has signed a new deal and will be staying at the club beyond this season.
Liverpool FC can announce Mohamed Salah has signed a new contract that will keep him with the club beyond the 2024-25 season. The forward, who is enjoying another stellar campaign for the Reds, has committed his future by putting pen to paper on the deal.
Salah is expected to lift his second Premier League title with Liverpool at the end of the season, with the Reds the heavy favourites to win the league ahead of Arsenal.
It's actually Salah's hope for Liverpool as a title-winning team for many years to come that encouraged him to extend his contract, with the winger likely being the subject of interest from several teams in both Europe and the Middle East.
"I would like to say to to the fans, I am very, very happy to be here. I signed here because I believe we can win a lot of big trophies together. Keep supporting us and we’ll give it our best, and hopefully in the future we’re going to win more trophies.”
However, Liverpool have been able to convince their star man to stay for another two years at least, which will come as welcomed news to Arne Slot and co considering how vital Salah has been this season.
Liverpool sit with a 13 point gap over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, with just six games left to play, and Salah has been a key part of that.
Salah has scored 27 goals in 32 Premier League games for Liverpool this season, but has also been at his creative best, popping up with an additional 18 assists in domestic league football.
Those incredible returns not only see Salah as the heavy favourite to win the Premier League Golden Boot next month, but also the real front-runner in the race for the PFA Player of the Season, which many are expecting Salah to win again.
In fact, many are calling Salah's campaign one of the best individual seasons a player has ever had in the Premier League, even topping his first for Liverpool in 2017/18, so it shouldn't be too surprising to see the winger competing for individual honours too.
As well as individual honours in England, Salah's season has been so incredible that he's also one of the three favourites to win the Ballon d'Or at the end of the year, but he does sit behind Raphinha in that race.
Salah was actually at the top of the market until February of this year, but Liverpool's elimination from the Champions League has seen the Barcelona attacker overtake him in the betting.
The announcements didn't stop there for Liverpool, with less than a week after Salah's new deal was announced, it being confirmed that Virgil van Dijk has also signed a brand-new contract and will be staying at Anfield.
