Mauricio Pochettino's latest comments spark Spurs conversation
Published:
Following his recent comments about Tottenham, Mauricio Pochettino has fuelled rumours of a potential return to the club, while Ange Postecoglou remains under real pressure.
Current USMNT head coach Pochettino has plenty on his plate as he looks to prepare USA for their home World Cup in 2026, but that hasn't stopped him from discussing a future return to Premier League management, putting more scrutiny on Ange Postecoglou - who now finds himself among the favourites to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job.
Pochettino was sacked in 2019, just months after leading Spurs to a Champions League final against Liverpool, and the London club have failed to reach those heights since, despite acquiring globally-acclaimed managers such as Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
Speaking on a potential return to the club, Pochettino told Sky Sports: "I remember one interview I said I would like one day to come back to Tottenham... What I thought, still after six years or five years, I feel in my heart, that yes, I would like one day to come back."
The comments have heaped further pressure onto the shoulders of Ange Postecoglou, whose Spurs side have been underwhelming in the Premier League this season.
That being said, Tottenham are still among the favourites to win this season's UEFA Europa League, a trophy which would vindicate the Aussie after stating "I always win things in my second year" and surely buy him more time in the Spurs hot seat.
How do Pochettino and Postecoglou compare?
The similarities between both managers seem to end quite abruptly once you look past the surnames and into the stats, with their respective Premier League records immediately highlighting a gulf.
Pochettino boasted a win percentage of around 56% as Tottenham manager, while Postecoglou's sat at roughly 45% at the time of Poch's comments, which may go some way to justifying the pressure he finds himself under.
This lowly league form kicked off with a disappointing opening-day draw at Leicester City, who have gone on to be relegated to the Championship, and Spurs have struggled to find any consistent form for the entirety of the campaign.
While Pochettino had his Tottenham side fighting for titles and silverware, Postecoglou's Spurs story has been very different so far, with the Europa League proving to be his last chance at saving the season.
